Support your local high street by bike or on foot this Small Business Saturday
The countdown is on for Small Business Saturday (1 December), a UK wide event aimed at encouraging consumers to shop locally and support businesses in their community.
Getting more people walking and cycling could help save our high streets, according to recent research by Transport for London.
The research shows making it easier and safer to walk and cycle in London's town centres and high streets led to an increase in retail rental values.
It also found people travelling on foot, by bike or by public transport spend the most in their local shops – 40% more each month than car drivers.
To celebrate Small Business Saturday we’re calling on people across West Yorkshire to enjoy shopping locally by bike or on foot.
You could be doing your full weekly shop, just popping to the shops for milk, or simply hanging out at your local café enjoying a hot drink and a cake watching the world go by.
We’ll be choosing the best cycling and the best walking photo next week with the luck winner receiving an Abus bike lock for cycling and a special CityConnect buff and water bottle for walking.
Did you know we’ve helped more than 200 organisations across our region become more cycle friendly?
Through our Bike Friendly Business scheme offers employers can access expert advice and grants of up to £5,000 to encourage more staff to commute by bike, with bronze, silver and gold accreditation for organisations going the extra mile.
CityConnect’s “Bike Friendly Businesses” have seen a 25% increase in cycling, thanks to the pioneering scheme.
