Saltaire Brewery gears up for bike-powered cinema
A free bike-powered cinema will take place at Saltaire Brewery on Wednesday 13 June to celebrate Bike Week (9-17 June), an annual UK-wide event aimed at inspiring people to discover the benefits of cycling.
The team behind West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s £60m CityConnect programme aimed at making it easier to cycle and walk has joined forces with the Shipley-based brewery for the event.
People are invited to come along to the Brewery Tap on Dockfield Road, from 7pm, with the film being shown from 8.30pm onwards.
Audience members are being asked to select their film of choice by placing a vote on the Facebook event page prior to the event and they will also be encouraged to take it in turns to use their pedal power to keep the film running.
Saltaire Brewery’s new cycle parking was funded by CityConnect’s Bike Friendly Business scheme, which provides tailored advice and support, as well as grants of up to £5,000, to help organisations be more cycle friendly.
Alice Phillips, events and hospitality manager at Saltaire Brewery, said: “This year we’re stepping our Bike Week game up a gear. From the bike-powered cinema to our Ride n’ a Pint social cycles with MTB Cycle Yorkshire, we have things covered for all beer loving cyclists. The pop-up cinema is going to be a brilliant evening and what a great way to get everyone involved by having the audience pedal to keep the film running – hopefully there’ll be no cliff hangers!
“Our brand new bike rack has already gone down well with our Brewery Tap regulars and being right next to the canal, we’re a great refuel stop for cyclists. With lots of people peddling for a pint throughout the week, Miski will also be bringing its fantastic Mexican street food along to close celebrations on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June. There’s no better place to enjoy Bike Week than here at Saltaire Brewery.”
The mid-week cinema will also give visitors an opportunity to get their bike checked over by a mechanic before the film starts.

In partnership with BikeRight! and Sustrans, CityConnect is also hosting a drop-in information session at Magic Rock Brewing, Huddersfield, on Wednesday 13 June.
People are invited to come along between 2pm and 7pm to find out more about CityConnect’s free adult cycle training and maintenance courses, and to get their bike checked over by a mechanic.
