Family cycling

We’ve teamed-up with Bradford-based cycling coach Emily Groves, who has a wealth of experience in teaching children to ride a bike, on a series of videos aimed at helping you and your family enjoy cycling together.

Would you like to teach your child to ride a bike but don’t know where to start?  Or do you want to build their confidence and skills?  Maybe you’re looking for new places to cycle with your family.

Whatever the reason and whichever stage you and your family are at help is at hand.

Family cycling activities this Summer!

CityConnect will be offering cycling activities for families this summer in Bradford and North Kirklees.

Delivered by local partners Hopon & Onna Bike, families can improve their cycle skills or learn to ride.  Those who are a little more experienced can enjoy short led rides taking advantage of local off-road routes.

Families where everyone is a reasonably confident rider, can learn tips to cycle safely on roads as a group.

Families will have their own dedicated activity slots.  Two families who know each other can attend together (there will be a maximum number of riders).

We’re piloting this in two areas during the summer and then hope to run family activities in other districts in the future, based on what we learn.

There is information and advice about teaching a child to ride, or riding together as a family at https://www.cyclecityconnect.co.uk/get-cycling/family-cycling/

North Kirklees

To start week beginning Monday 9 August.  For the first week or two, Hopon will trial this new activity with existing contacts with families in the Spen / North Kirklees area.  After this, families can book through the Hopon Bike website - https://hopon.bike/book-session/

What will be offered:

  • Learn to Ride/ Improving cycle skills for the whole family (all off-road)
  • Short led rides for families where everyone attending can ride for periods of at least 10 – 15 minutes – on off-road routes wherever possible
  • On road family cycling– riding on the road for families (where all attending are confident riders)

Sessions will be held at Spen ‘Princess Mary’ Athletics Stadium, 124 Bradford Rd, Liversedge, WF15 6LW

Bradford

To start week beginning Monday 9 August.

What will be offered:

  • Learn to Ride for the whole family (all off-road)
  • Improving cycle skills – family members have learnt to ride, but extra practice and advice will help people feel more confident.  Our instructors have a range of fun exercises and activities to help people improve their bike handling skills

(Our sessions will always have two instructors so we can run separate activities – such as learn to ride for some family members, and more advanced skills for others)

  • Short led rides for families –with some on-road cycling – for families who feel confident being led by our instructors on quieter roads

Sessions will be held at West Park, West Park Road, Girlington, Bradford, BD8 9SJ
